Permalink Asking the LazyWeb: Trip to Geneva and Paris: 09:27:22 pm

My wife and I are going on a combination work/fun trip to Geneva next week. We're flying in onto Geneva Saturday morning, and I'll be giving a couple of talks at a workshop at CERN on Monday and Wednesday. Wednesday afternoon we are going to take the TGV to Paris and stay there until Sunday morning. We're staying at CERN's hotel for our stay in Geneva, and I found a place very near the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. I have a couple of questions for the lazyweb:

1. What should we do in Geneva? I haven't spent much time on this leg of the trip. We'll be outside the city staying at CERN, but I figure there must be some nice sites around.

2. In Paris, how can we get some fantastic but relatively inexpensive pastries?

3. How can we find decent, inexpensive food in Paris? I don't want to get stuck in tourist shops, and we're not really haute cuisine people. But, we're going to be in Paris, so we should probably not regret our culinary choices. We will hopefully have a little fridge in our hotel so we might prepare some food there.

4. I guess I don't have a fourth question. Thanks!

Fantastic but inexpensive pastries? Dunno, just walk in any "boulangerie" that's not too close to a main touristic attraction.

Now a good French restaurant not too expensive. Hum... Well I can't remember my secret addresses, and I am not at home, so I can't look them up (I think one of them is one "rue Abel", but I don't remember the name. I tend to remember the place, not the name). However "rue du pot de fer" there are a few nice ones (I guess google maps will tell you where this is, if not ping me).

Geneva isn't that interesting IMO, but if i were you i'd take the train to Evian-les-Bains, then take the boat to Montreux from there and then from there take the train back to Geneva. There's a lot of things you can do along the way, check it out at the local Office du Tourisme (the Olympic Museum in Montreuz for example).

Geneva's downtown is nice, or the parks if you like them.
Or there's the Swiss Camera Museum in Vevey on the other side of the lake if you have time :-)

Paris:
for lunch time I suggest chartier near Opera. It's a traditional french resturant, nothing fancy, but the setting is very nice. http://private-list.com/best-places-382.html

3. random nice places:
  • café de l'industrie, good food (home made pies and deserts, salads, traditional french food), intimate, cosy and totally parisian (17, Rue Saint-Sabin, 75011 Paris) ~13 euros.
  • Chez prosper, typical parisian brasserie (7, Avenue du Trône, 75011 Paris) ~15 euros
  • Paris-Hanoi, vietnamese food (74, rue de Charonne, 75011 Paris) because Paris is also full of good foreign restaurants. ~10euros
  • L'été en pente douce, because fine restaurants in touristic areas exist! (23, rue Muller, 75018, Paris)(near montmartre) ~15euros
