Permalink rBuilder and Novell SUSE Linux!: 12:43:16 am

rPath has just announced a deal we've struck with Novell to OEM their SUSE Enterprise Linux. This means that in addition to our standard rPath Linux distribution, our customers can choose to use SUSE as a base for their appliances. All of the technical benefits of a Conary-based system will remain available. rBuilder and the associated rPath technologies aren't tied to any particular version of Linux, and we've proven this by adding support for SUSE. Who's next?

Does this mean that Conary can now be used as an alternative to OpenSuse's default package management system? That would be awesome.

Hi Ed,

In principle, OpenSUSE could also be ported to Conary, and used on rBuilder for software appliances or for normal Linux usage. The details would need to be worked out between rPath and OpenSUSE to make this work. Specifically, we've built some automation tools to make the conversion of the SUSE RPMS to Conary format easy. Those would have to be shared or recreated, depending on the legal details between rPath and Novell. Feel free visit the #conary IRC channel on FreeNode and ask around.
